Since the centenary of Finzi’s birth in 2001 his reputation has blossomed and it is good to feel that our Festival that year played at least some small part in that revival. Now we have the opportunity to sing his great choral masterpiece, setting Wordsworth’s wonderful poetry, ‘Intimations of Immortality’. Nicholas Hurndall Smith, who sang so memorably for us in Finzi’s St Cecilia Ode in 2001 and in the War Requiem in 2005, will again be our Tenor soloist and our fine local instrumentalists will form the orchestra.
By way of introduction to the piece a workshop was held on Wordsworth’s poem on Friday November 27th 2009, the night before the first rehearsal. The speaker was Pamela Woof, hon. President of the Wordsworth Trust. The talk was at the Wordsworth Trust, Dove Cottage, Grasmere.
To complete the programme we have commissioned Roland Fudge, whose reputation as a composer is rapidly growing, to write a companion piece to the Finzi, using similar forces and children’s voices. This will be entitled Celestial Light and we are planning that it should involve exhibitions and displays of artwork and poetry by local young people.
This concert will give us another exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform new and unjustly neglected music and to encourage young singers and instrumentalists.
Please regard the final 3 rehearsals, with the orchestra, as essential. All rehearsals will be in Kendal.
